When calling kisses cause E-mail

At Seven on Sunday past we were talking about Jonah - week three of the series. It's going really well.

Spoke about the change that occurred when Jonah finally said 'yes' to Gods call to go to Ninevah.

See, all of us are called by God to doing something for Him on earth. He wants us to do it, to enjoy doing it and to be effective at it. Yet I meet so many Christians who either don't know what God wants them to do, or more often people who don't want to do what God wants them to do. Sure they spiritualise it and throw in a verse or two, but deep down such people are heading for a weekend in a big fish.

The clue to calling and if it's the correct one for your life is fruit. Is your God given calling - your ministry for want of a better term - producing fruit? Are there results? Do you have the self energising thrill of living your life doing what God has shaped you to do? Yes you do? Great, then I think you are exercising your calling.

What if you answer 'No,' truthfully, deep down...No? Can I lovingly encourage you to think whether or not your dream matches Gods dream for you. I'd rather be a fantastic elbow than a rubbish knee. It breaks my heart when Gods dream just isn't enough.

What is your calling then? How do you know what it is? Same answer: fruit. What are the areas in your life that bears fruit? These are areas that God has shaped and equipped you to be effective in.

Sometimes we think ministry needs to be full time work, missionary work or such like.  But God most likely use you where you are - and if he calls you into full time service, then let the clarity of such a call be your guide. If it's not clear, then don't follow it.

Jonah said yes second time around. When he got to Ninevah he said all that God wanted to say and a city the size of Derry fell to it's knees and came to Christ. Now that's fruit. Even though God's call to Jonah seemed offensive and unlikely, Jonah allowed his call to kiss God's cause and something wonderful happened.

I encourage you to do the same.

Sometimes if you kill the fish, you restrain your future.
In life, a hard time is never far away. Often we try to limit the pain, bury the hurt and have a desire to recover quickly.
God is in the middle of your hurt. Jonah was in the belly of a whale and God met him there.
In the belly of a fish God was fashioning Jonah's future instilling faith he would need to do the job God had for him to do. Impressively Jonah didn't pray for an end to the situation nor try to beat his way out. Instead Jonah praised God.
In the middle of our hard times God is fashioning our future too. We try to end a trial before it's time. When we kill the fish we might be ending something God is doing for our futures, causing more harm than good.
Dignify the trial, praise God through it and be assured He is working behind every scene.

So I'm doing the 'Super Daddy' bit.

To show the kids how stuff grows I bought a packet of tomato plant seeds and a propagator and planted them - with the full expectation of never seeing anything that comes close to a seedling.

However, two weeks and 50 seedlings later, I had to do something about the tomato plants.

I rushed to Homebase, in a fit of green fingered enthusiasm and bought a load of small pots wherein I would transplant the seedlings.

So with the remains of last week's Sunday Times spread over the kitchen table, 'the Beatles' and I got to work. What a mess. Note to self: never do this again!

Transplanting seedlings is messy work. I know plants need more room if they are ever going to grow and bear fruit, but is the mess really necessary?

Seems to me it is. It is with bringing up kids anyway.

There's always mess with growth.
